Ammonia is a very useful chemical and is used all around the world. Its most important use is to produce good fertilisers from ammonium nitrate, which are applied to the soil and help provide increased yields of crops such as corn, wheat, and soybeans. The problem has always been to find a way of getting the nitrogen in the air into a form that can be absorbed by plants and ammonia has proved to be the way to do this.
Ammonia dissolves easily in water to form ammonium hydroxide which is commonly used for house hold cleaning. It was also used as refrigerant gas in old fridges, but less so in modern fridges.
Ammonia is used to make nitric acid, this chemical is then used to make dyes, fibres, plastic, and explosives.
